Thirty years ago, there was a different virus in the headlines, and police violence barely made the news. It was different, unsafe times that produced No Safety. But we might need them now more than ever.

No Safety only released three albums during their half dozen years as one of the most vibrant bands in the maelstrom of Downtown experimentalism. Cuneiform Records is reissuing in digital format their 2nd and 3rd albums, both from the '90s – Spill  and Live at the Knitting Factory  – and releasing a newly discovered album, Live in Italy 1994, which significantly adds to the band's legacy.

There’s an ambiguity to the anger in No Safety’s songs, an uncertainty that makes the songs all the more salient, and makes the sentiments still relevant today. It sometimes feels as if No Safety would be writing protest songs if they could only figure out where to start. There’s just too much to deal with.

No Safety disappeared without the heralding it deserved. Now, for a momentary flash, they’re back.

"Live at the Knitting Factory" shows that the New York-based quintet has turned to recognizable pop styles for inspiration. Blending free improvisation with funk, it attains an enviable equilibrium.

The guitarist Chris Cochrane...On "Ms. Quoted" he reclaims an old rap by the Clash and connects it with a rhythm-and-blues phrase from Soul II Soul. ...

Even the craggy instrumentals by the harpist Zeena Parkins have been polished. Fragments are grouped...creating continuity. In under three minutes, "F Is for Fake" moves through five passages...

The ominous tone that drifts through the 17 works isn't unusual for No Safety; the group has long been fascinated by the way modern dilemmas -- from sexism to urban deterioration -- are addressed in society. In the past, Mr. Cochrane has sung of how AIDS is robbing the world, and his ardor can be daunting."
Jim MacNie, The New York Times, April 3, 1994

Live at the Knitting Factory was produced by No Safety and John Siket

DOWNTOWN SUPERGROUP NO SAFTEY
RELEASES PREVIOUSLY UNHEARD 1994 LIVE RECORDING

Live in Italy 1994 catches the band — Chris Cochrane, Kato Hideki, Zeena Parkins, Ann Rupel and Tim Spelios — in all its fury, going out in a blaze at the end of their final tour.

No Safety only released three albums during their half dozen years as one of the most vibrant bands in the maelstrom of Downtown experimentalism. They were, they’ll say today, always at their best live. The last album they released during their short life—Live at the Knitting Factory—made the case. The new Live in Italy 1994 seals the deal.

Live in Italy 1994 opens with a chugging montage of three songs, incorporating the Art Bears’ “Man or Monkey” with two of their own tunes. “Not a Slave to Unforeseen Future,” draws inspiration from artist David Wojnarowicz while incorporating a song from Rupel’s previous band, V-Effect. “Pavlov” displays the diversity of textures the band was capable of, in no small part due to Zeena Parkins’ harp, keyboard and sampler. The final cut is Parkins’ “Take Me,” a jaggedly punkish anthem for contradiction and indecision, resolving in her and Rupel repeating “yes” and “no” in Russian and the words “take me” swirling down the reverb drain.

The newly uncovered recording is from the band’s last tour, and in fact the last show the rhythm section of Rupel and Spelios played with them. Rupel returned to career and family life. Cochrane focused his energies on social work while continuing to compose and play music. Parkins has been the most musically active; projects with the likes of Fred Frith, Elliott Sharp, John Zorn and countless others, recording and touring with Björk and leading her own bands have made her an international name in unusual and experimental music. But No Safety disappeared without the heralding it deserved. Now, for a momentary flash, they’re back.

"This is so exciting from start to finish.
I saw No Safety live in New York in ’88.
They were amazing then, hot sound, like a unique, contrary voice in a scene that could take the concept of ‘cool’ a little too seriously.
This recording is several years later, they are on tour in Europe, everything is up a notch, about to explode.
I remember that European tour vibe, this catches it 100%."

LAURENCE MILLER: bass clarinet, composer
ROGER C. MILLER: piano, percussion, cornet, composer
JACK WATERSTONE: alto saxophone, composer

Download complete press release; extract:

The brothers Miller grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They formed their first band together in 1967, covering 13th Floor Elevators and Mothers of Invention. Two years later they were engaged in freeform rock improvisations and started their first all-original rock band Sproton Layer (With Magnetic Fields Disrupted, 2012: World in Sound) .

The Fourth World Quartet, with Jack Waterstone rounding out the quartet, was born out of the four members' expansive interest and immersion in  free improvisation, classical music and jazz. All members composed, ranging from fully scored pieces to graphic scores or mere verbal instruction. Laurence arranged the Art Ensemble of Chicago's "Tnoona" for the group and Roger arranged the main theme from Igor Stravinsky's mini-opera "Renard the Fox". The boundaries were wide.

Three horns and a piano is already unusual, but add Benjamin's post-psychedelic guitar work and Roger's occasional "wall-of-piano" stylings, and things definitely stepped out of any traditional ensemble setting. Gentle melodies bump up against atonal bebop. Tightly structured forms contrast immediately with open improvisation. Wailing horns blaze over contained piano ostinati.

In a few months the band put together this repertoire, a testament to focus and extreme creative activity. If they only played two shows and lasted only a very short time, the connections into the future were many. Included here are two songs by Roger that would later appear on the first Birdsongs of the Mesozoic record: "The Transformation of Oz" and "Winter's Dream" - the latter name changed to "Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous" by the time it graced Birdsongs' freshman release. Their friend Rick Scott who recorded this session and later became a member of Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, used the same Braun 1/2 track that Martin Swope would use for tape loops in Mission of Burma. And if Roger's adaptation of "The Rite of Spring" for Birdsongs was more ambitious than his arrangement of "Renard the Fox", still, here is where that idea began.

By 1977 punk rock had kicked in, and Laurence (guitar) and Benjamin (alto sax) went back to their rock roots and joined the Detroit punk band Destroy All Monsters which included Ron Ashton from the Stoogesand Michael Davis from the MC5. In 1979, Roger co-formed Mission of Burma in Boston, which went on to be influential on the indie rock movement.

Give this a listen. Music from a pivotal time period. That expanded not long afterwards.

“One of the most original and compelling groups I know, playing some amazing compositions that seem to tread effortlessly between Van Dyke Parks and folk music from an as-yet-unidentified culture, while making all the things you've always thought of as difficult sound as effortless and natural as breathing...
Amazing production. Extraordinary compositions. You need to hear it.”

Jack O' the Clock‘s Leaving California is a highly-detailed musical adventure that reveals new layers with repeated spins. Throughout, the songs of bandleader Damon Waitkus recall artists such as David Sylvian, Fairport Convention, and Elliott Smith, while creative musical arrangements showcase the band’s high-level compositional and instrumental chops.

Since Jack O’ The Clock’s first record — 2009’s Rare Weather — Jack O’ The Clock has become a tight and formidable ensemble whose music has evolved through a prolific stretch of releases. The songs on Leaving California have been gestating for about six years of performances, and the time had come to document this music before bandleader Damon Waitkus and wife Emily Packard left the state of California for Vermont in 2019. The result is a set of songs performed at the height of the band’s collective powers, recorded and mixed by Waitkus from between 2018 and 2020 and mastered by Myles Boisen.

THUMBSCREW

"...a streamlined trio quickly becoming today's premiere small jazz group"
 Francis Davis, NPR

“Made up of three highly distinctive voices in the world of jazz and avant-garde music, Thumbscrew should probably collapse under the weight of its own star power but Tomas Fujiwara (drums), Mary Halvorson (electric guitar) and Michael Formanek (acoustic bass) are just too aware of the potential of this supertrio to let that happen.”
-Something Else!

Thumbscrew is the all-star collaborative trio of Mary Halvorson (guitar), Tomas Fujiwara (drums), and Michael Formanek (acoustic bass). All of their albums have been released on Cuneiform Records and have received international acclaim. Brilliant live performers, they've performed at festivals and served numerous residencies at art centers and prominent venues in the US and abroad.
