TST, Le Tout Sur Le Tout, was founded in January 1994 by Jacques Demierre during the New Jazz Festival On Tour '94, held in Switzerland.

The group consisted of bandleader/composer Jacques Demierre (piano, keyboard), Sylvie Courvoisier (piano, keyboard), Gergely Suto (clarinets), Adrien Kessler (double bass, voice), and Andreas Valvini (drums), who was replaced by Jim Meneses in 1995.

TST's musicians came from a variety of backgrounds, including jazz, contemporary music, rock, and experimental music.

The music TST created was based on the listening skills, openness and curiosity of its musicians, combining the power of rock and the energy of improvised music, experimentation and song, strict writing and free improvisation, electric and acoustic sound.

All the compositions (with the exception of one by Adrien Kessler) are based on Jacques Demierre's compositions, reworked live in collaboration with the musicians.

"If our First Nature lies in the wild and lonely places, somewhere along the way we recognized our Second Nature of art and invention.

The pieces on this album, some of which stem from work on music for emotive environmental films, owe much to this First Nature. I have a strong sense of location for them all.

Due to unforeseeable technological circumstances inherent in the Second, much of what might be taken for keyboards on this album was played on, or generated from guitar and bass; much of what might be taken for drums was played on a keyboard. I blame the manuals." – Rick Biddulph

1994 INTRO
"After over 20 years of involvement in music in a variety of guises, I am delighted to present my first solo CD, Second Nature.
Predominantly instrumental, with the inclusion of two songs, this album was written and recorded over a period spanning several bands and other pursuits, but owes its origins to work on music for three emotive environmental films. The cinematic and natural world connections continue through the album’s different moods in real or imaginary locations, through haunting sax - led pieces to wide screen epics. Initial recording took place in my home 8-track studio, including the performances of Pierre-Marie Bonafos (for a session fee of a pair of Doc Marten shoes unavailable in France) and this was expanded and polished in outside facilities with the invaluable contributions of the other musicians."– Rick Biddulph

2021 NOTE:
"This reissue involved transfer to 2” tape for the first batch to be worked on, subsequently for the remainder to the new ADAT format, digital multitrack on VHS tapes. The nascent sequencing and sampling technology in the wizard hands of Andy Reynolds was Cubase Notator.
How quickly the future becomes clunky and dated!"  – Rick Biddulph

Bio Info: Rick Biddulph

Guitarist/ bass player Rick Biddulph is a well-known musician to fans of the Canterbury scene due to his involvement in bands such as Caravan Of Dreams and Mirage, as well as other associations with musicians such as Hugh Hopper, Dave Stewart and Richard Sinclair.

Rick Biddulph was born in Kent in 1950. His interest in music really started with the rise of British rock'n'roll bands in the early 60's. From age 15, Rick learned the guitar playing along to Shadows records, and moving to Canterbury for his studies (English and American literature) by the end of the decade he joined or formed several folk bands, dropping guitar in favour of bass in the meantime. He also went to see concerts : "I vividly remember hearing Richard Sinclair for the first time, and realizing the melodic potential of the bass that I was only beginning to guess at".

In 1971, Rick became associated with local folk group Spirogyra, consisting of fellow students from the University of Kent : Barbara Gaskin, Martin Cockerham, Steve Borrill and Julian Cusack. "I went along with them as roadie for a spate of European tours, my first taste of the road, and made my recording debut soon after, playing mandolin on one track of their second album". Eventually, Rick joined the final line-up, featuring Gaskin (vocals and piano), Cockerham (vocals and guitar) and John Gifford (woodwinds). At around the same time, he also collaborated with Steve Ashley (Albion Band, etc.) for a Dutch tour and several demo recordings.

Then, from 1974 to 1980, Rick Biddulph was the roadie and monitor mixer for Hatfield and the North, then National Health. This resulted in his playing on one track of National Health's second album, and various demo recordings with Dave Stewart, which in turn resulted in the shortlived band Rapid Eye Movement. In 1976, Rick formed a band at Stewart's request to support on a Health tour, airing the songs of his flatmate at the time, Spirogyra's Steve Borrill : Crass Stupidity also featured John Gifford and guitarist Doug Chandler. During the second half of the seventies, Rick was involved in several low-key projects, including local gigs with Richard Sinclair and drummer Vince Clarke in Canterbury.

In the 80's, Rick Biddulph mainly played with bar bands (pick-up gigs, R&B, jump-jive, etc.). "A valuable experience", he recalls, "on-the-spot learning of bass rudiments I'd missed out on playing all the clever stuff!". He also worked extensively with Dave Stewart, first as part of Rapid Eye Movement (also featuring Jakko Jakszyk and Pip Pyle), then as guest on several Stewart-Gaskin recordings. Also during this period, Rick played a few one- off gigs with Hugh Hopper and did some demos with him.

In the late 80's, Biddulph started working on soundtracks for Greenpeace videos. These later provided the basis for his first solo album. On the live front, he also kept active playing bass and guitar with the French band Anaid, appearing on the Four Years CD. Saxophone player Pierre-Marie Bonafos was also in the line-up. "In a parallel universe to all that, I have been sustained by an alternative freelance career in specialised finishing work, progressing from kitchen and office stuff, to PA equipment (for Steve Borrill), to guitars (for Doug Chandler's shop) and, currently, on design models and prototypes (including work on the Synthaxe and Stepp guitar synthesizers)".

Between 1991 and 1994, Rick Biddulph worked closely with Richard Sinclair as the live bass player in Caravan Of Dreams, consisting of a trio with Andy Ward on drums, augmented whenever possible by David Sinclair (keyboards) and Jimmy Hastings (sax and flute), and others. Late in 1994, he was invited by Andy Ward to join Mirage, an all-star band featuring ex-Camel keyboard player Peter Bardens, for a tour which also involved former Caravan members.

In 1995, Rick Biddulph's first solo album Second Nature, was released on Voiceprint. Initial recording took place in Rick's home studio, and this was expanded and polished in outside facilities with the invaluable contributions of other musicians. Predominantly instrumental, with the inclusion of two songs, the album was written and recorded over a period spanning several bands and other pursuits, but owes its origins to work on music for three emotive environmental films. The cinematic and natural world conncections continue through the album's different moods in real or imaginary locations, through haunting sax-led pieces to wide-screen epics.

“His music is fluid, graceful, and quite personal; very easy to get inside and enjoy….. melodic rather than ambient, filled with grace and inner beauty." - Music Uncovered, U.S.A.

It’s a release that grows with each listen; remarkable for its simplicity, yet stunning in its ability to convey emotion."Exposé, U.S.A.

listen / share a track from UR– on Soundcloud:

Leading up to its fifth studio album, Accordo dei Contrari had one simple yet ambitious goal: to make music that was “original, challenging, and beautiful at the same time”.

By that measure, UR- is a resonant success [and an impressive introduction to North American listeners]. Laced with sky-soaring melodies, complex polyrhythms, and dark riffage, the Bologna-based art-rock ensemble’s latest music – released in the band’s 20th year – invokes elements of the musical past while sounding distinctly Italian, undeniably sophisticated, and utterly new.

One obvious touchstone for Accordo dei Contrari is the ecstatic energy of the Mahavishnu Orchestra’s Birds of Fire. In fact, the title of UR-’s second track, “Così respirano gli incendi del tempo”, even makes a veiled allusion to the pioneering fusion ensemble’s masterwork; it translates as “This is how the fires of time breathe”.

Here, the musical story-telling is almost filmic—as it often is, according to leader and primary composer Giovanni Parmeggiani. “My writing takes inspiration from imaginary scenes or dreams,” the keyboardist explains.

A further key to Ur- can be found in the structural elements Parmeggiani builds into his compositions. He’s especially fond of basing certain passages—the new record’s “Secolo breve” would be a good example—on a repeated keyboard ostinato, something he describes as both a considered nod towards minimal composition and a playful elaboration on the hard-rock riff.

Parmeggiani admits that as Accordo dei Contrari’s bandleader and principal composer, he can occasionally “act like a tyrant”. Tyrant or not, Parmeggiani is also generous in his praise. “The present lineup is the best group I have worked with so far,” he enthuses. “Accordo dei Contrari now sounds more cohesive than ever, and it is a very solid band.”

listen / share a track from Spectral Music on Soundcloud:

Spectral Music is Ghost Rhythms’ second release on Cuneiform Records after 2019’s Live at Yoshiwara, a live album consisting almost entirely of new material, and is their sixth full-length studio effort. After delegating much of the writing on Yoshiwara to their bandmates, the band’s leaders, drummer Xavier Gélard and pianist Camille Petit were back firmly at the helm.

Gélard had toyed with the idea of using the title Spectral Music for a while, but it only began to make sense conceptually during the writing process. However, the real theme of the album, remoteness and telepathy, came late in the process. The parallel with the current Covid crisis was of course not lost on Gélard and Petit. “This is the second album we have made remotely due to the current situation. We’ve always used overdubbing in our recordings, but never to quite that extent. The process suggested another parallel – the notion that modern technology (the Internet of course but you could argue it really began with the telephone), creates an illusion that distance is abolished. For me it’s not so much communication as a form of fake telepathy. If anything, technology actually reinforces the sense of remoteness. At least that’s the way I felt during the process of making albums that way.”

Ghost Rhythms played their first concert with an audience in 18 months in late September and more are planned from November onwards. “It felt like learning to walk again, but it was great to interact with an audience!”

OTHER WORLDS

File under:  FUSION / ELECTRIC JAZZ / JAZZ-ROCK PROGRESSIVE ROCK / AVANT PROGRESSIVE

Catalog #: Cuneiform Rune 480
Format: CD, Digital
Release Date: October 22, 2021

It’s not that Other Worlds, Android Trio’s second album,
is going to be huge:
it is huge, as in enormously thrilling and boundlessly inventive. Ironically, the global pandemic that left guitarist Max Kutner, percussionist Andrew Niven, and bassist Eric Klerks unable to meet in the flesh for more than a year also allowed them to make a record that blends grand statements with rhythmic complexity.

listen / share:

“Get your headphones,” Android Trio guitarist Max Kutner advises. Other Worlds is a wild ride.

It’s also a great advance over Android Trio’s powerful but recorded-in-a-hot-moment debut, Road Songs. Whereas the first record is essentially a performance document, Other Worlds is a fully fleshed-out compositional statement, marked by intricate production strategies and an assortment of extraordinary guests.

“Because we weren’t limited by studio costs and all that, we just went hog-wild on overdubs,” the guitarist explains. “So we were able to make an album to a level of excess that’s more like the things we grew up listening to. Kind of like Gentle Giant, or Genesis: this huge sound.”

If you go looking for influences, others will quickly surface. Progressive rock is certainly here: Other Worlds stands comparison to King Crimson’s masterpiece of the genre, Red, and Eric Klerks is one of a handful of electric bassists who can rival Yes mainstay Chris Squire’s singular blend of grandiosity and fierce aggression. In their deployment of odd time signatures and memorable melodies, many of the new record’s tunes owe a debt to the Bill Bruford/ Dave Stewart/ Allan Holdsworth school, while traces of American fusion can also be detected.

But, as Kutner points out, “we all love video-game music,” along with American minimalism, the hyper-technical electric jazz currently coming out of New York City, math rock, and the Ghanaian drumming that all three studied during their overlapping years at CalArts. (In fact, Other Worlds kicks off with one of those beats, before guest Jonathan Sindelman’s keyboards lead “Anger Dance” off in another direction altogether.

And then there’s the intriguing fact that Kutner, Klerks, and Andrew Niven were all schooled in playful virtuosity, sprung rhythms, and no-holds-barred experimentation while playing in two of the great legacy bands of progressive music: the Grandmothers, who specialize in the playful and occasionally self-mocking reinvention of the Frank Zappa/ Mothers of Invention repertoire, and the Magic Band, drummer-vocalist John “Drumbo” French’s uncannily inspired tribute to the music of his mentor and monster, Don “Captain Beefheart” Van Vliet

“That’s how we kind of came together,” Kutner says. “Eric I knew more, because I’d played with him in a few different projects. Andy I met later, when I did this band called the Grandmothers of Invention, which was kind of like a Zappa alumni thing. We sort of crossed paths in Australia for the first time in 2014, when Eric and Andy were doing the Magic Band. And, you know, we were all like ‘This is great, but we need to do our own thing.’ Like, we can’t just play in legacy bands forever. We have to pay homage to the things we like by making our own stuff.”

Zappa’s influence is most apparent in the new record’s “Serial Tune”, which opens with a very Zappa-esque trumpet fanfare and draws on the late guitarist’s interest in putting early-20th-century compositional strategies into more accessible frameworks. Beefheart, in turn, comes to the fore on “Secular Athletes”, an appropriately muscular take on the brittle, bent blues abstractions of Van Vliet’s landmark Trout Mask Replica.

Neither sounds like anything other than Android Trio music—but there is another historical link in the presence of co-producer, keyboardist, and guitarist Mike Keneally, who was Zappa’s “stunt soloist” during the late 1980s, as well as a great composer and songwriter in his own right.

“I knew Mike, because we’d premiered one of his orchestral pieces in L.A. in 2011, and I’ve been in close with him ever since,” Kutner says. “And I figured that if there was anybody who would get all of the different references—the reference points for what we’re trying to do—and kick us in the ass to make sure that we were tighter in doing it, it would be Mike."

“He can play, sure, but he’s going to get subtle stuff in a way that a lot of other people wouldn’t get.” he continues. “And that’s the very cool thing about Mike: even though he’s twice our age, he’s just on it. He’s professional and he’s enthusiastic about things in the exact same way.”

With Keneally on board as musical guest, band counselor, technical supervisor, and ultimate aesthetic arbiter, Android Trio has made the album they really wanted to make — and Kutner stresses that Other Worlds is an album, in the best and most old-school possible way.

“All of us really love albums as much as we love performing,” he explains. “So we wanted to make this record something that’s fleshed out, in the way of the classic albums of the ’60s and ’70s: full of weird production stuff, and arrangements that might not necessarily translate to or even be possible in a live setting. We’re not going to be selling a million copies of this, so let’s just go for it and work with what we’ve got,” he adds. “We can’t be in the same room together, but we’re not limited by an engineer’s costs, or limited time for overdubs, or physical gear, so let’s just see what happens.

“That was really the focus: our love of sound—and it was probably the most fun album I’ve ever been a part of!”

Andrew Niven – drums, percussion, synth, sequencers
Eric Klerks – bass, 8-string guitar, synthbass

BISBÂYÉ

"...a hyper-caffeinated... all-out assault with... interlocking  polyrhythms, frequent time changes, and dense riffing.... Thumbs way up."
Avant Music News

Remarkably, Quebec band Bisbâyé includes two guitarists and two drum kits: the bassist acts as musical fulcrum as the guitarists answer each other’s riffs and the percussionists answer each other’s beats in real time.

Band leader Larouche cites Don Caballero and Meshuggah as influences. King Crimson’s influence is also undeniable, so is the sophistication of the math-rock genre’s best acts, while you can find some of his favorite composers (Steve Reich, Gyorgy Ligeti) in there as well.

Because the Covid pandemic prevented previous record release events, this is Bisbaye’s first show since releasing their Cuneiform debut, Le Sens De La Fin / The Sense Of An Ending in 2021!!

SCHNELLERTOLLERMEIER

"Schnellertollermeier marries brutality to avant-garde rock and jazz. A classic power trio from Switzerland, the band plays with punk fury and dazzling technical dexterity to create booming, bone-rattling music that stalks, confronts and astonishes."
– The Wall Street Journal

Brutal-jazz power trio Schnellertollermeier doesn't compromise. Their fresh and uncompromising mix of jazz, punk, rock, sound and free improvised music, combined with great musicianship, interplay and intense energy, has awed audiences at festivals of jazz, rock, pop and experimental music worldwide. In celebration of their new release on Cuneiform, the album 5, they tour Northern Europe this coming Fall 2021.

IT'S THE HOLIDAY SEASON!!
WINTER 2021

Support live music and in-person music classes as venues reopen,
while also enjoying music at home
via

ACTIVITIES ONLINE !

Music can make a positive difference in our lives, and help us survive in evolving and uncertain times.  We're thrilled to see the world of live music reopening this holiday season. Concerts calendars  are resuming in many places, and  we at Cuneiform are enjoying  seeing music and people in person, most often still outside, and most often at our fave local venue, Rhizome DC.  Globally, some music venues and festivals and festivals are allowing concerts inside, and larger crowds outside, for vaccinated audiences.  Schools have reopened, and in-person music classes are resuming.  We are sooo pleased to be able to experience live music again.

But the winter weather can be inclement, and Covid  has been known to unexpectedly surge.  Besides cautiously seeing live music, we'll continue to also enjoy music at home, and we hope that you continue to enjoy recorded music as well on your technology of choice.  You can explore tracks from nearly 500 recordings released by Cuneiform Records since 1984 on cuneiformrecords.com, our website, or on our Bandcamp, SoundCloud or YouTube sites, and also watch recordings of recent and vintage concerts that we regularly post on YouTube.

Cuneiform Records has a treasure chest of interesting music to serve as soundtrack, inspiration and solace during these evolving and challenging times. We have a mammoth catalogue of releases by some of avant music's most esteemed icons as well as young rising stars, available for purchase at the Cuneiform Records Bandcamp store and at one of our sister companies, Wayside Music. Your CD and LP purchases support indie musicians, indie labels, and small businesses.

During this Holiday Season, when looking for gifts for your music-loving friends and treats for yourself, we encourage you to buy music from Cuneiform Records and Wayside Music.  By doing so, you'll support creative musicians; small / micro businesses; and indie music and art.  We invited you to visit Cuneiform Records' and Wayside Music  stores:

• Discover new music on Cuneiform Records' BANDCAMP PAGE :  support our artists & our indie label by purchasing music.

• Visit our internet store, WaysideMusic.com (established 1980!), to purchase  music from ALL your favorite labels!

We also have a ton of FREE entertainment for your enjoyment on several online platforms:
